First Pakistani Mountaineer Hoists National Flag on Nanga Parbat this Year
A Pakistani mountaineer has successfully summitted Nanga Parbat, the world's ninth-highest peak. Abid Baig has become the first Pakistani and only the second mountaineer globally to reach the summit of Nanga Parbat without supplemental oxygen and porter’s help this year. As part of an international team sponsored by the National Logistics Corporation (NLC), Baig's accomplishment highlights NLC's commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and its dedication to promoting mountaineering at the national level.
Leading this audacious endeavour, Baig showcased exceptional skill by ascending the treacherous slopes of Nanga Parbat. The team embarked on their challenging journey in the first week of June, opting for the Diamer face—a route known for its formidable obstacles. This include the 270-meter Kinshofar wall, one of mountaineering's most daunting challenges. Unfortunately, due to health issues, other team members from Estonia and Taiwan could not continue their journey.
Despite facing several setbacks due to inclement weather in the first week of July, Baig persevered. On July 10, in the early hours of the morning, he made his final push and triumphantly reached the summit where he proudly hoisted the national flag alongside NLC’s emblem.
Expressing his gratitude, Abid Baig thanked the NLC management for their unwavering support, which he credited as instrumental to his success. He emphasized that such valuable sponsorships will inspire amateur mountaineers across the country to bring laurels to Pakistan.
It is also noteworthy that NLC has also sponsored the first all-women K2 expedition, reflecting its dedication to women's empowerment and gender equality. This team is currently undertaking the formidable task of scaling the world's second-highest peak. This sponsorship by NLC aims at women inclusivity and breaking barriers in the realm of mountaineering.
